Testimonials

Bridget Glasgow

I chose (the issue of) transport after working with Arthur in secondary schools because of his expertise and huge range of creative ideas for engaging youth... Already the youth have initiated more action back in their own region than the previous years because of Arthur's facilitation skills which enabled them to have a deeper understanding and perspective of transport in Auckland and the western world. Arthur also provided simple and practical ideas that the students could implement and be effective in making a difference.

Teacher Seminar: Walk/Bike Topics for the Classroom

Teacher Professional Development Seminar: Walk/Bike Topics for the Classroom

No matter how you commute to school, you can inspire an attitude of active transportation amongst your students. This seminar offers tools to incorporate walking & cycling topics into the classroom. With increased awareness – and attention to safety and security issues – students can be empowered to incorporate regular physical exercise within their own commute.

Within a generation, families have increasingly chosen to drive their children to school. Slowly, a counter-trend is emerging to reverse this trend through a diverse array of walk/bike to school activities. This seminar will outline the fundamentals behind some of these strategies along with specific examples that can be adapted at your school.

Objectives: By the end of this 90-min seminar, participants will be able to;

  1. identify at least three safety issues that need to precede walking & cycling promotion,
  2. demonstrate three walk/bike activities that can be used in their classroom
  3. describe at least two benefits of walking & cycling for each of; health & fitness, learning, environment, community, traffic safety & personal security
  4. describe how personal travel choices & attitudes can be a source of inspiration and modelling for students,
  5. identify curriculum connections for at least two walk/bike activities at their grade level, and
  6. list at least three resources they can access for further information & extensions.
